ICL – Implantable Contact Lenses

VICLbuttonSQ1Have you ever wished you could see perfectly clear without glasses or contact lenses?  Technology continues to advance and there are multiple options for people who want to permanently fix their poor vision.  The latest edition to this list of options is the Staar Visian ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens – also known as Implantable Contact Lenses).  This lens is specifically designed for people who are near-sighted (Myopic) and would like to avoid some of the possible side effects and risks of LASIK (the most common method for correcting myopia).

“I have more patients who are thrilled with the outcome of their Implantable Contact Lenses than any other surgery that I do.  People who have been nearsighted their entire life can now see in the distance without glasses – it is a life changing experience.  My goal is to be able to provide this amazing technology to every patient in Las Vegas who would benefit from the procedure.  In most cases we can work with payment plans and different financing options so that for a reasonable monthly payment the implant can be done.”

-Peter DeBry, M.D.

Dr. DeBry was one of the first surgeons in Las Vegas to implant the ICL and has extensive experience in vision-correction implant surgery.  If you have ever considered laser vision correction such as LASIK or PRK, don’t have a procedure until you have had a consultation to find out if you are an ICL candidate.  Please call our office to book a consultation today.  702-825-2085

Who is a Candidate?

The ICL (Implantable Contact Lens) is designed for patients who are nearsighted (Myopic) with a prescription of -3.00 or greater.  In the past many clinics have only offered the ICL to patients who were very nearsighted, with a glasses prescription of -10.00 or -12.00, or patients who are not a candidate for LASIK because of problems with the eye.  Our goal at NV Eye Surgery is to guide each patient to the best refractive procedure based on the best possible results and we can do this by bringing the ICL price down to a competitive range compared to LASIK.

Dr. Peter DeBry will work with each patient to make sure they can get the best technology for their vision-correction surgery.

The ideal candidate for the ICL includes

  • People who are nearsighted and motivated to see better without glasses
  • A healthy eye with no significant eye diseases
  • A stable refraction with no big changes in the power of your glasses or contact lenses for a few years

ICL Risks

ICL Surgery compares with Cataract surgery in regard to risks. (Cataract Risks)

The great thing about Implantable Contact Lenses is that changes in prescription can be made by removing and replacing the lens.

ICL Surgery Details

What Makes the Visian ICL Different?

Although the Visian ICL is often informally named an “implantable contact lens,” in the United States, the acronym ICL in the Visian ICL stands for “Implantable Collamer Lens.”  Collamer is the unique material that the lens is made of.

Quality of Vision

The Visian ICL offers unparalleled quality of vision, providing excellent contrast. Two unique factors help explain this superior optical performance. First, the Visian ICL is made of Collamer – a soft, flexible lens material that contains a small amount of collagen – making the lens extremely biocompatible for a lifetime of clear vision. Second, the lens is placed inside the eye, where it continues to focus light accurately without any maintenance required.

Safe, Proven Procedure

The safety and effectiveness of the Visian ICL surgery implantation procedure has been proven with over 125,000 implants worldwide as well as recent U.S. FDA approval. Unlike corneal refractive surgery, the Visian ICL does not permanently alter the structure of the eye. Instead, the phakic IOL is placed in the eye’s posterior chamber, where it works with the natural lens to correct vision.

Small Incision

Unlike other phakic IOLs, the Visian ICL is foldable. This feature allows physicians to implant the lens using a smaller incision. The small incision procedure is a technique that is familiar to eye surgeons. The Visian ICL requires a 2.8mm to 3.0mm incision as opposed to the 6.0mm incision required by other FDA-approved phakic IOLs. This smaller incision is seen as less invasive, does not require sutures, and is astigmatically neutral.

Removable, if Necessary

Although the Visian ICL is meant to stay in the eye indefinitely, it is easily removed by a trained ophthalmic surgeon, leaving the patient’s future options open.

UV Protection

The Visian ICL features UV eye protection, assisting in the prevention of the development of various eye disorders.  UV radiation may contribute to the development of macular degeneration, the leading cause of vision loss among older Americans; and cataracts, a major cause of visual impairment and blindness around the world.

ICL Post-Op Care

ICL surgery creates an incision in the cornea (front window of the eye) smaller than 1/8 of an inch.  The very thin lens is then inserted into the eye and tucked behind the iris where it floats in position.  Post-operative care is very simple:

  • A few medication eye drops are used three times daily to help prevent an infection and keep the eye comfortable while it heals.
  • You should be gentle, with no rubbing the eye for a few weeks while the incisions heal.
  • No swimming for one week, you can get in a pool but keep your head above the water.
  • There are no restrictions to everyday activities.  Very vigorous activities should be avoided for a week or two (like skydiving, or mixed martial arts).
